Oxford 43LRL011 1/43 Land Rover Lightweight Red
Overview:
The Oxford Land Rover Lightweight has been produced to operate in a variety of roles, mostly military across the Royal Navy, Army and the RAF, serving at home and abroad. Here we see it in a civilian role with the canvas back variant rather than the hard top.
Decorated in bright red with a khaki coloured canvas back, it also has silver front bumpers, black wheels and black rear bumpers. The radiator grille is wiped matt black with the Land Rover badge embedded into it. Registered OAD 962P from 1975, the interior of the vehicle is dark green with black seats and steering wheel. A final detail sees the spare wheel attached to the bonnet with red strapping.
The Land Rover Lightweight is a military vehicle that was produced by Land Rover from 1968 to 1984. It was developed in conjunction with the British Fighting Vehicles Research and Development Establishment to meet a specific requirement for an air portable vehicle with a half ton payload and being capable of towing light support weapons.
Based on the Series II Land Rover, but it featured a number of modifications to make it lighter and more durable. These included:
- A lightweight aluminium body
- A reinforced chassis
- A more powerful engine
- A higher ground clearance
- A shorter wheelbase
It was also equipped with a number of military features, such as:
- A 24-volt electrical system
- Blackout headlights
- A towing hitch
- A canvas tilt
The Lightweight was used by a number of different military forces around the world, including the British Army, the Royal Marines, and the Dutch Army. It was also used by a number of civilian organizations, such as the police and fire service.
